Let us tell you about one of the best-kept secrets in style and fashion. Accessories are one of the easiest and cheapest ways to update your wardrobe and add variety and animation to your outfits. They dress up a plain outfit, can make your outfit look expensive and they allow you to create your own style. Accessories also help to hide and draw attention away from features that we don’t want to highlight.
An outfit can go from ordinary to amazing when you know how to add the correct accessories. If you keep your outfit plain and simple, most accessories are easy to match. Be careful not to add too many colours in your accessories, keep it to 2 or 3 maximum.
You can accessorize by adding a purse or a pair of shoes in a different colour. Try wearing a hat to add a little bit of flare to your outfit. They are great in both summer and winter and for those bad hair days. When you wear the right type of hat you look fantastic and feel increased confidence. Try with matching gloves or belts. If you are not sure how to wear belts, our Style Consultation will take you through the size and styles of belts that will suit you and your bodyline.
Don’t be tempted to wear all your jewellery at once. If you wear large, dangling earrings, match them with a bracelet rather than a necklace. The combination of both earrings and necklaces often creates the illusion of too much ‘bling’. The idea is to look chic and not that you have tried to wear everything all at the same time.
Instead of always wearing a necklace, try wearing a scarf or pashmina. They are great ways to add some colour to your outfit and a pashmina can often be used instead of a jacket or coat. They are very versatile and unlike bulky coats, they fold away easily. Learn a few basic scarf tying tips to create different looks.
Costume jewellery is generally inexpensive and a fabulous accessory as it does not give away its cheaper price tag. For something different to what is found in the department stores, check out a second hand or vintage store. You may be amazed at what items you already have stored away, or better yet, try having a look at your mother’s wardrobe for costume jewellery or accessories she no longer wears.
Pearls go with everything and can dress up a casual outfit without any effort at all. They are the jewellery accessories that are appropriate for daytime and will instantly take your outfit into the evening. In the work environment hosiery should always be worn with a skirt. Wear patterned hosiery with care. When the pattern is stretched over the leg, it can often make the thigh area look larger than usual.
Rotate your accessories. Don’t fall into the trap and comfort zone of wearing the same accessories each day.
Different accessories can turn one outfit into several different ones without having to purchase new clothes. Accessories provide a means for you to stay within your fashion budget and still allow you to add to your wardrobe every season.
When accessorising remember that less can often give more of an impact, especially in a more traditional work environment. The more conservative your work environment, the more conservative your accessories should be. A good quality watch and pearl or stud earrings go a long way. Always wear a pair of earrings even if this is the only jewellery you wear.
Your accessories need to coordinate with your outfit and match the fabric and colour of your clothing. They should not compete against one another for attention. If you keep your accessory colours and metal tones within your colour pallet you will find it easy to mix and match them with different outfits. Decide whether it is your outfit or your accessories making the statement. Do not choose both, it can be overwhelming for those around you and looks like you could not make up your mind.
The proportion and shape of your accessories need to match your body proportion and shape. This includes your earrings, belts, belt buckles, bags, shoes, hats and glasses. They should also be kept appropriate to your age. Funky coloured plastic jewellery that worked in your early 20s doesn’t project the image you want for your 30s and onwards.
Your accessories should reflect your personality. If you choose to wear bold accessories you need to feel comfortable when wearing them. If you are more conservative try accessorizing with matching shoes and a handbag.
It is important that your accessories are appropriate for the season and occasion you are wearing them for. Consider the occasion or event in advance and plan accordingly. Finally don’t forget about your nails. Non-manicured nails are easily noticed.
